Join Curator of Historic Textiles, Virginia Theerman, of The Charleston Museum for a deep dive into the history of indigo production in the United States and its colorful role in quilting. From the colonial introduction of the plant to South Carolina by Eliza Lucas Pinckney and the enslaved people who first produced the dye, to its use in 19th-century chintz quilts, indigo has left its lasting mark on American material culture. Theerman will discuss all of this and more, including the renaissance of the indigo cottage industry in the 21st-century Lowcountry.

Free for Taft members; $5 for non-members. Includes admission to special exhibitions and the museum’s collection galleries.
